This Arts and Crafts lamp table dates from the 1910 period and follows the Liberty style of design. Fashioned from dark brown carved hardwood, the square table has a top with a bamboo-effect moulding and an undertier featuring a carved circular iris motif in the centre. The framework incorporates sculpted, flared legs decorated with floral and leaf carvings down the uprights, alongside a frieze below the top decorated with carved bamboo detail. Measuring 71 cm high and 38 cm square, the table is well suited for placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room setting.

FAQs

Anglo-Japanese Arts and Crafts furniture emerged in the late 19th century, combining British joinery with Japanese-inspired motifs such as irises, bamboo shapes, and stylized asymmetrical carving.

These pieces typically feature solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, finished with dark wood stains and decorated with low-relief carving and traditional mortise-and-tenon joints.

Authentic examples display specific design characteristics including carved floral panels, simulated bamboo moulding along edges, and occasionally stamped inventory numbers or metal trade labels beneath the lower shelf.

Position the table beside a modern armchair, styling the top tier with a simple ceramic lamp or glass vessel to complement the dark carved woodwork.

Dust regularly using a dry cloth and apply a clear wax polish along the wood grain, avoiding liquid sprays or positioning the item in direct sunlight.
