This French Renaissance Revival tavern bench dates to the mid nineteenth century and is constructed from solid oak with a light bleach finish in a warm brown tone. The high panelled backrest displays three relief carved scenes depicting figures in interiors, flanked by decorative mouldings and small human figure finials on the upper corners. Substantial carved lion sculptures form the armrests, projecting forward above carved upright supports that terminate in paw feet. The hinged seat lifts to reveal an internal storage compartment, while the front apron of the box base exhibits two panels decorated with foliate scrolls and central mask reliefs. Measuring 113 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this seating piece works practically in a hallway, living room, or dining area to provide both seating and storage space within a traditional interior scheme.

FAQs

A settle bench is a wooden bench featuring a high back, armrests, and frequently a hinged seat that opens to reveal storage inside. Popular across Europe from the medieval period onwards, these benches were constructed from hardwoods like oak and decorated with relief panels depicting genre scenes or foliate motifs.

Traditional French benches were built from solid European oak using traditional joinery, including mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. The relief panels and figurative supports were hand-carved using chisels and gouges before being finished with natural waxes or oils.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving rather than uniform machine work, along with natural wear on high-touch areas such as armrests and seat edges. Look for period joinery techniques, timber shrink marks along panel borders, and a natural patina formed by decades of wax polish and oxidation.

Position the bench in an entryway, hallway, or boot room to serve as both seating and storage. Contrast the heavy, ornate woodwork against neutral plastered walls, contemporary lighting fixtures, and minimalist flooring to create a balanced focal point.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly with a soft brush or microfibre cloth to prevent build-up in deep recesses. Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak timber, avoiding modern silicone Sprays and direct exposure to radiators or heat sources.
