This rare apothecary glassware item is an English crystal glass feeding cup from the Georgian and William IV period, circa 1830. The piece is formed from clear lead crystal glass with a bright cut glass finish, taking the shape of a sturdy cylinder with an integrated side spout and a distinctive funnel-shaped rim. Visible details include vertical cut glass fluting around the lower portion of the body, a faceted geometric base, and thick transparent walls showing subtle surface wear consistent with age. Measuring 9.5 cm high, the vessel fits comfortably on a compact display shelf. In a modern home, this piece works wonderfully as an intriguing decorative accent placed upon a bookshelf within a gentleman's library or study setting, serving as a conversation piece that highlights nineteenth-century medical and domestic history.

FAQs

Feeding cups, also known as pap boats or invalid feeders, were healthcare vessels used to administer liquid nourishment or liquid medicine to bedridden, elderly, or infant patients.

During the Georgian and Victorian eras, feeding cups were commonly made from heavy lead crystal glass, glazed earthenware, porcelain, pewter, or silver, depending on the status of the household.

Authentic glass feeding vessels from circa 1830 often feature hand-cut facet or flute decoration, heavy high-lead content glass with slight imperfections, and pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing techniques.

These small glass vessels work exceptionally well as decorative curiosities displayed on lit bookshelf displays, styled inside curio cabinets alongside historical books, or arranged in bathroom vignettes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft sponge, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or dishwashers which can cause irreversible glass clouding or sickness.
