Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 20th century Japanese Taisho period set comprises three shallow circular sake cups rendered in wood finished with red urushi lacquer. Each vermilion vessel is embellished with intricate gold leaf maki-e detailing depicting detailed coastal seascapes featuring sailing boats and Mount Fuji under a muted grey-and-gold sky. The interior surfaces display visible surface glare and subtle variations in the hand-painted motifs across the three sizes. Measuring 3 cm in height with diameters spanning up to 14 cm, these portable pieces demonstrate traditional lacquer craftsmanship. Today, these decorative traditional items find placement upon a living room sideboard top or display cabinet as ornamental tabletop accents. Collectors of Asian lacquerware can appreciate the contrasting red and gold colour palette alongside the miniature landscape compositions displayed across each dish surface.

FAQs

Sakazuki are shallow, saucer-like vessels used for drinking sake during formal ceremonies and celebrations in Japan. Crafted with a wooden base and coated in urushi lacquer, these pieces frequently feature gilded maki-e decoration depicting classic landscapes or natural scenes.

These cups were produced by applying multiple thin layers of natural urushi tree sap over a lightweight carved wooden core. Gilding was achieved using the maki-e method, where fine gold powder was sprinkled directly onto damp lacquer before curing.

Authentic pieces feature light natural wood structures underneath, smooth hand-applied lacquer layers, and finely detailed hand-painted maki-e motifs. Natural age wear often appears along the base rims or raised edges.

Shallow lacquer cups can be presented on display stands inside glass cabinets, placed along a sideboard top, or arranged atop art books on a coffee table. The contrasting vermilion lacquer and gold detailing add texture and interest to modern shelving.

Lacquerware should be dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive pads and chemical cleaners. Display items away from direct sunlight, dry heating sources, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent cracking.
