The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marking an era of rapid modernisation where Japanese metalworkers combined traditional techniques with new international markets, producing highly detailed cast bronze and mixed-metal sculptures.

These pieces were typically produced using the lost-wax casting method with copper-alloy bronzes, often enhanced with surface treatments such as patination, gilding, and inlay work using gold, silver, and shakudo.

Authentic pieces often feature fine, hand-chased surface details, natural patination resulting from age, and artist signatures or foundry marks inscribed on the base or reverse side.

Place the sculpture as a focal point on a credenza, mantelpiece, or glass-fronted display cabinet where neutral lighting highlights the metallic textures and contrasting tones of the bronze and gilding.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes or water, which can damage the original historic patina and delicate parcel-gilt surface finishes.
