FAQs

Moorish and Islamic-influenced inlay work gained immense popularity in late 19th-century Britain, championed by retailers like Liberty & Co., who imported or commissioned exotic wooden furniture featuring intricate marquetry and mother-of-pearl accents to satisfy the Victorian appetite for eclectic design.

These pieces typically employ dense hardwoods such as walnut or beech as a base, decorated with elaborate geometric micro-marquetry using contrasting timber veneers, bone, and mother-of-pearl inlay secured with traditional animal glues.

Authentic pieces often display hand-cut geometric tessellations, natural ageing of the timber and shell materials, traditional hand-planed or sawn undersides, and construction methods consistent with Victorian workshop practices rather than modern mass production.

An ornate inlaid table works exceptionally well as a contrasting focal point in a minimalist or eclectic space, functioning effectively as a bedside stand, an end table beside a sofa, or a display plinth for simple ceramic or bronze objects.

Preserve inlaid wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting and wood shrinkage, cleaning only with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally treating the timber with appropriate microcrystalline wax.
