Originating in the late 18th century, the canterbury was initially designed as a low stand for holding sheet music and scores, later evolving during the Victorian era to accommodate periodicals, books, and writing materials.

These pieces were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring intricate hand-turned spindles, partitioned dividers, and often incorporating small drawers raised on castors.

Authenticity is determined by examining traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, the natural patina and oxidisation of the timber, and period-appropriate hardware like brass castors.

This versatile storage piece functions effectively as a side table beside a sofa or armchair, utilizing its partitioned compartments for organising modern magazines, books, or vinyl records.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the historic finish.
