FAQs

Washstands evolved during the 19th century from utilitarian personal hygiene items into refined pieces of bedroom furniture, often featuring marble tops to protect the wood from water splashes.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring dovetailed drawers, turned legs, and inset marble slabs designed to support basins and ewers.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut dovetailing, traditional timber shrinkage, historical tool marks, and the presence of genuine natural marble slabs with period-appropriate thickness and edge profiling.

An antique washstand works effectively as a hallway console or a bathroom vanity base, contrasting clean modern decor with traditional craftsmanship and warm wood tones.

Maintain the mahogany using microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and clean the marble top with mild, pH-neutral soap while avoiding acidic substances that can etch the stone surface.
