We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian washstands were essential bedroom utility pieces introduced before indoor plumbing became widespread, designed to hold washing basins and water pitchers. By the late 19th century, craftsmen fitted them with marble tops and splashbacks to protect the timber frame from water damage.

High-end Victorian washstands were predominantly built from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with imported marble tops such as rouge, Carrara, or Saint Anne marble. Drawer pulls were typically cast from brass or carved from matching solid wood.

Authentic pieces feature dovetail drawer joints, original cast brass hardware, hand-carved cresting or pediments, and genuine marble slabs with natural veining. The underside of the carcass often reveals period construction techniques, including hand-sawn secondary timbers like pine or ash.

In modern interiors, marble-top washstands often serve as converted bathroom vanity units housing plumbed sinks, or function as elegant hallway console tables and dining room sideboards for drinks displays.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish along the grain annually to protect the mahogany. Wipe marble surfaces immediately after spills using pH-neutral soap and warm water, avoiding acidic cleaners that etch marble.
