Nursery fire guards became essential domestic items in the nineteenth century, designed to protect young children from open flames and falling embers in coal-heated rooms.

These guards were typically constructed using a robust iron or steel wire mesh frame, frequently accented with solid brass top rails, mounts, and protective footplates.

Authenticity is identified through period manufacturing techniques such as hand-riveted joints, heavy-gauge woven wire mesh, aged brass patination, and wear patterns consistent with age.

An antique fire guard adds industrial texture and historical character to a hearth, pairing well with both traditional brick fireplaces and minimalist stone surrounds.

Preserve the metal by gently dusting with a soft brush and applying a microcrystalline wax to brass elements, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that strip the historic patina.
