Description

An unusual small 17th century oak food cupboard having a single door and vented panels. The cupboard has been converted into a coffer, probably sometime in the 19th century so the elm top is later. The original top would have been pegged to the top rails, you can see where the pegs were all located, the interior also has slots at one end for a small shelve. Its possible that the stiles were once much taller as they are very low now for a cupboard. There is signs of old wood worm in the top but otherwise it is in good condition.

A 17th century food cupboard, often referred to as a meat safe or bread cupboard, was a functional piece of vernacular furniture used in domestic households before the advent of refrigeration. These cabinets typically featured pierced panels or ventilation holes to allow air circulation while protecting perishable provisions from insects and rodents.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from native timbers such as English oak, elm, or pine, depending on regional availability. Construction methods relied heavily on traditional joinery techniques, including pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed boards, and wrought iron strap hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct tool marks, such as pit-sawing or adze marks, along with natural timber oxidisation and wear consistent with age. Examination of the ironwork, hand-forged nails, timber shrinkage patterns, and historic joinery details helps determine authenticity.

Such foundational wooden furniture anchors a room with textural warmth and historic gravity. It can be integrated into contemporary kitchens as a statement storage piece, used in a hallway for linen, or contrasted against neutral plaster walls to highlight its age and craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent timber splitting or warping. Surfaces should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood without damaging the historic patina.
