DESCRIPTION

This is a very elegant and unusual 19th century ash five tier stand. The lyre gallery back over sides with finely turned bobbin spindles and five slatted shelves. Perfect as a decorative accent in itself, but also useful as a display stand or music shelf.

Provenance: From the contents of Brook House, Ongar, the former home of Gillian Raffles (1930-2021) a pioneering art dealer and owner of the Mercury Gallery in Cork Street, London in 1964.

104cm high x 50cm wide x 36cm deep

CONDITION

There are minor marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. There are some losses and repairs to the spindles, which are inherently very delicate. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The whatnot originated in France during the 18th century as an etagere before becoming a staple piece of Victorian furniture used for displaying ornaments and books.

These units are typically constructed from native hardwoods such as ash, walnut, or mahogany, featuring turned supports, slatted or solid tiers, and mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned spindle work, natural timber ageing, and patination consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

An antique whatnot functions effectively as an open display unit in living spaces or studies, hosting curated collections of books, ceramics, and small sculptures to add vertical interest.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural wax polish to nourish the wood.
