This pair of early 19th-century Regency period statues takes the form of classically dressed muses in the manner of Humphrey Hopper. Modelled in black painted plaster with an ebonised finish, the figures hold draped bowls fitted with gilt bronze candle cups and gold-coloured flame finials. Each muse rests on a round black plinth, which in turn stands upon a square pink and white marble block base displaying natural veining and moulded edges. The figures wear classical robes with intricate drapery folds, and their hair is styled in detailed curls. Measuring 92 cm high, 23 cm wide and 23 cm deep, these Neoclassical decorative objects suit placement on a large sideboard top, console table or mantelpiece in a formal living room or hallway. The statues provide ambient lighting through their cup holders and bring a grand architectural accent to traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

Plaster sculptures depicting classical muses gained prominent popularity during the Neoclassical revival of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by ancient Greek and Roman mythology, these figures represented the arts and sciences, frequently serving as architectural accents and decorative elements in grand estates.

These statues were traditionally cast by pouring plaster of Paris into multi-piece moulds containing internal iron armatures for structure. Once dry, the surfaces were finished with painted, patinated, or ebonised coatings to imitate bronze, before being secured to solid stone or marble plinths.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp moulding detail alongside surface patination and soft edge wear. Look for signs of layered paint finishes, subtle surface craquelure, and heavy marble or slate bases with historic fixings rather than modern adhesives.

Displaying classical statues in pairs creates formal balance when positioned symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace alcove. They add strong architectural interest against contemporary neutral backdrops or deep, dark wall finishes.

Dust plaster statues lightly using a dry, soft natural-bristle brush or clean microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, detergents, or liquid solvents, as moisture can absorb into porous plaster and dissolve historic painted surface treatments.
