FAQs

Papier mache furniture gained immense popularity in Victorian Britain during the 19th century, particularly in centres like Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where manufacturers developed techniques to press paper pulp with glue, resin, and chalk to create durable, lightweight items.

Authentic pieces were constructed using layers of paper pulp compressed under heavy pressure, then treated with multiple coats of japan black lacquer, often embellished with mother-of-pearl inlay and hand-painted gilt artwork.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the weight, the depth of the lacquer finish, hand-painted details, subtle craquelure, and the construction of the underlying paper layers which display organic irregularities distinct from modern synthetic replicas.

This piece functions effectively as an occasional accent table in a living room, providing a dark visual contrast and historic texture when paired with contemporary minimalist seating or placed beside a sofa.

To preserve the delicate lacquer and gilt work, keep the item away from direct sunlight and excessive heat, clean only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, and avoid moisture or chemical polishes.
