The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in Britain during the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, promoting traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and simple forms inspired by medieval and vernacular traditions.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid native hardwoods such as oak, constructed using traditional joinery methods including mortise and tenon joints, visible fixings and hand-finished surfaces that celebrate the natural grain.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct tool marks, traditional patination resulting from age and use, hand-cut joinery, and material characteristics consistent with late 19th or early 20th-century cabinetmaking.

This piece can be integrated into modern spaces as an accent display surface for sculpture or ceramics, adding architectural interest and natural warmth through its tactile wooden construction.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
