The canterbury originated in late 18th-century England, traditionally designed as a small stand for holding sheet music, folios, or books, with the name reportedly derived from the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned an early example.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, or rosewood, featuring joined partitions, slatted or pierced sides, and often small turned legs mounted on castors for mobility.

Authentication relies on examining timber grain, hand-cut joinery, traditional finishing methods like shellac or wax polish, and appropriate wear patterns on the base and feet consistent with age.

This versatile storage piece functions effectively alongside seating areas to hold periodicals, books, or vinyl records, blending traditional wood tones with modern furnishings.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber, while avoiding direct sunlight and moisture exposure.
