Description

Cold painted Austrian bronze figure of a Pheasant. Well cast and with fine detail and colour. A very beautiful example and in excellent original condition. Unsigned but excellent quality. c 1900.

The tradition of Vienna Bronze can be traced to the middle of the 19th century. Around 50 manufacturers resided in Vienna at the turn of the century, as small Austrian bronze sculpture with its fine detail enjoyed great popularity.

In the late 19th Century a number of Austrian bronze foundries situated in Vienna and the Austrian-Bohemian border began to specialise in the technique of ‘cold painted’ processes. This naturalistic finish was created by painting the raw bronze with several layers of special and secretive enamel colours called ‘dust paints’, which resulted in fine life like studies of the various models and sculptures. This process was often applied when the cast was still warm, the natural shrinkage on cooling adding to the permanency of the colour as it annealed the paint firmly into the metal. As the colour was not ‘fired’ this process is referred to as ‘cold painted'

Cold-painted bronze refers to items cast in bronze and then decorated with several layers of dust paint, which was applied without firing the piece in a kiln. This technique gained prominence in late 19th and early 20th century Austrian foundries, notably in Vienna.

These pieces were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method for intricate detail, utilizing a copper-alloy bronze base. Artisans then meticulously hand-painted the surfaces with polychrome pigments to achieve realistic coloration.

Authentic pieces often feature foundry marks, artist ciphers, or Geschutzt stamps indicating a registered design. Examination under magnification typically reveals the characteristic chipping or wear of the cold-painted pigment over the aged bronze surface underneath.

Such decorative objects add a layer of historical interest and textural detail when placed on surfaces like study desks, mantelpieces, or bookshelf displays. They complement traditional, naturalist, and eclectic study spaces particularly well.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent paint fading and metal oxidation. Dusting should be performed strictly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding any liquid cleaners or polishes that would strip the original cold-painted finish.
