This nineteenth-century butler's tray table originates from Bäckaskog Castle and is made from solid oak with a warm brown finish. The removable rectangular top tray includes a moulded three-quarter gallery edge, accented by four upright turned finials positioned at each corner. The folding support base is constructed with turned X-frame legs, joined by two turned stretchers near the lower section and fitted with an unusual hinged middle shelf that provides additional storage space. The piece measures 86.3 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. This versatile item functions well as an occasional table in a living room, placed at the end of a sofa, or utilised in various multi-use capacities throughout a traditional or country house interior.

Butlers tray tables emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries as portable serving furniture used in stately homes. Designed with removable or folding trays mounted on collapsible bases, they allowed domestic staff to transport food, tea, and drinks efficiently between service areas and living quarters.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Construction features include mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs or X-frame folding mechanisms, gallery edges to prevent items from sliding, and brass hardware fittings.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand craftsmanship, such as subtle variations in turned spindles, original brass hinges with period wear, and historic timber shrinkage around joints. Natural patination and oxidation in unexposed areas under the top or frame also indicate authentic age.

In modern spaces, a butlers tray table functions effectively as an occasional drinks bar, an end-of-sofa side table, or a bedside stand. Its structural X-frame profile provides visual contrast alongside modern upholstered furniture.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Position the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood movement or splitting.
