FAQs

Edwardian washstands emerged during the early 20th century, typically featuring lighter woods, cleaner lines, and more restrained ornamentation compared to their heavy Victorian predecessors. They were designed for upper and middle-class bedrooms as functional basins before indoor plumbing became fully integrated into sleeping quarters.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, often paired with a durable marble top and tiled or marble splashback to withstand water splashes. Traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, dovetail drawers, and brass hardware were standard practice.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-specific indicators such as hand-cut dovetailing, natural timber shrinkage, original brass or ceramic hardware, and minor wear consistent with age. Additionally, the underside and backboards will often show genuine age-related oxidisation and tool marks absent in modern reproductions.

An antique washstand can be repurposed as a distinctive console table in a hallway, a compact vanity unit in a guest bathroom, or a practical side cabinet in a living room. Pairing its classic wooden tones with modern minimalist accessories creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Marble tops should be cleaned using a damp cloth with mild, pH-balanced soap and sealed periodically to protect against staining from liquids.
