Walnut & Burr Walnut

Walnut is a hard, dense, tight- grained wood that polishes to a very smooth finish. It is a popular and attractive wood whose colour ranges from near white in the sapwood to a dark hew in the heartwood. When dried in a kiln, walnut wood tends to develop a dull brown colour, but when air-dried can become a rich purplish-brown. Because of its colour, hardness and grain, it is a prized furniture and carving wood. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable.

Burr walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.

Walnut "burrs" were often used to make fabulous furniture. Veneer sliced from walnut burl is one of the most valuable and highly prized by cabinet makers and prestige car manufacturers and is also a favourite material for shotgun stocks.

This French Empire ottoman dates from the nineteenth century around 1820. The piece takes the form of a rectangular centre stool and window seat with a deep hinged seat cushion, standing 54 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. The construction uses burr walnut veneer with a warm brown finish, paired with deep blue velvet upholstery on the tufted cushion. Details include scroll-carved curule legs with Greek key carvings on the feet, small brass castors, a turned central stretcher with decorative rings, and stepped mouldings around the seat rail. The interior reveals a satinbirch lined storage compartment. Place this ottoman at the foot of the bed or use it as a coffee table in a living room or dressing room to bring a grand Regency aesthetic to the interior space.

French Empire furniture emerged during Napoleons reign, drawing heavily from Classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture. Seating from this era features symmetrical forms, curule legs, carved scrollwork, and rich wood veneers.

Cabinetmakers favoured high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany and burr walnut, often finished with detailed hand carving and metal castors. Upholstery traditionally incorporated rich fabrics including velvet, silk damask, or heavy brocade.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, original wood patination, hand-turned stretchers, and period-correct carving motifs like Greek key or acanthus leaves. Inspecting the underside for historical construction methods and original hardware assists identification.

An antique French ottoman acts as a focal accent piece when placed at the foot of a bed, beneath a window, or beside a fireplace. Pairing classic carved wood and velvet with minimalist modern furnishings creates a balanced, layered interior scheme.

Keep timber surfaces clean using a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to nourish the veneer, keeping it away from direct heat sources. Vacuum velvet gently using an upholstery attachment and address spills immediately with a dry cloth without rubbing.
