The settle is a traditional wooden bench with high backs and arms, originating in medieval times, designed to protect inhabitants from draughts in large, cold halls.

Authentic settles are traditionally constructed from native solid timber such as oak, utilising mortise and tenon joints, pegged construction, and hand-carved panels.

Authentication involves examining timber oxidisation, tool marks, hand-cut joinery, wear patterns on the seat, and consistency of the wood grain throughout the piece.

An antique settle works effectively in a hallway or kitchen as a statement seating piece, often softened with linen cushions or sheepskin throws to balance its heavy wooden structure.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish and protect the wood finish.
