This charming early 19th-century German School portrait depicts a young lady wearing an exquisite hat decorated with lace along with an oversized pink bow.

Completed during the 1830s, the fine details here are synonymous with the artistic approach during the ‘Biedermeier’ period. Sandwiched between the Neoclassical and Romantic periods, the Biedermeier style influenced painting, interiors and architecture.

Following the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars, citizens desired a wholesome way of life without drama or whims of fancy. There was a collective feeling of national pride coupled with a need for stability. This demure young lady is the epitome of piousness. Covered almost entirely and peering out from within an enchanting decorative ensemble.

It’s unsigned but clearly by an accomplished hand.

Held within a wooden frame with a beaded inner border.
