In 1888, Cubley moved to Matlock Bath with his wife Julia and the pair had two daughters, Gladys and Kathleen. Kathleen was around six years old when he produced this work, so perhaps that’s her in the white bonnet.
Did you know? During the Victorian era, visitors flocked to picturesque Matlock for its spa waters. It became known for its colourful buildings and was dubbed ‘Little Switzerland’ by Lord Byron.
