This early 19th-century oil painting by British artist Augustus William Enness RBA (1876-1948) depicts a picturesque view in the sublime Yorkshire Dales.

Here, from our elevated vantage point, the undulant scenery extends for miles - across the silvery River Wharfe and out towards a haze of rolling peaks. While in the foreground, the abundant foliage is rendered with deft touches of textured oils. Cattle draw the eye.

Enness was a true master of light, working tirelessly to capture nature faithfully in all her beguiling moods. His formative experiences at the Slade School and the Academie Julian providing a solid artistic footing for his prosperous career.

He enjoyed Yorkshire and lived in Whitby between 1905 and 1915.

Signed in the lower left and held within a gilt frame.
