The Straw Hat: A Young Mediterranean Girl, Circa 1820 Oil on Canvas

Description

A wonderful portrait of a young woman with beautiful eyes. Dating from the early 1800s, the painting and the girl portrayed are most likely Southern French or Italian in origin.

The straw hat on the young lady's head, with its shallow crown and wide brim is a typical bergère style "shepherdess" hat.

Implying rural simplicity, and was also known as a milkmaid hat. However, its place in art history lends it more risqué undertones: it features in Fragonard’s suggestive painting The Swing c1767, as well as in an infamous portrait of Marie Antoinette painted by Vigee-Lebrun.

Presented in a Empire style frame, the overall size is 61 x 55 cm.
