As the sun sets over a rugged moor, golden embers drift beyond a distant horizon. The sky, a graduated hush of evening tints, punctuated by a scattering of passing clouds.
In the middle-ground, darkness - the scenery obscured in shadow. While, on the right, rising before an orange glow, four trees emerge in silhouette.
Lotze was 67 when he produced this peaceful work - tired, experienced, and wiser.
