This mid-19th-century oil painting by German artist Theodor Kotsch (1818-1884) depicts a far-reaching landscape with shepherd.

As the falling sun drifts beyond the horizon, its eminent glow illuminates the sky with Claudian tints. While a shepherd, in the midst of his flock, rests under the boughs of a silhouetted copse.

Kotsch was a master of Romanticism, elevating a view with an otherworldly sense of poignant drama. A reclusive masculine character, he expressed his emotions through art - capturing the sublimity of nature with accomplished handling.

Here, we see the natural world in all its abundant twilight glory. Towering over man and beast, while also providing a protective canopy. A shepherd living in perfect harmony with the environment around him.

Held within a splendid Rococo-revival gilt frame with decorative corners and centres.
