Plumbago Portrait Miniature of a Pimply Youth

18th century
Description

This well-drafted plumbago portrait shows a youth attired in a coat with generous lapels over a waistcoat with a standing collar and a deep stock in a style that was promoted in Regency England by the infamous Beau Brummell. His hair falls over his shoulders in loose curls.

*

Despite the artist's limited palette, this is still a colourful portrait in the sense that much attention has been paid to capturing the small details from the creases on the coat to the pimples on the young man's face.

*

Drawn on vellum and in fine condition, the portrait is housed in a rose gilt frame that is enclosed on the back.
