Fine Pair Of Watercolours By Frederick William Hattersley

A wonderful quality pair of watercolours by Frederick William Hattersley born 1859. The works are both titled on the frame; ‘The Village Carrier’ and ‘Gypsies preparing to move on’. The watercolours are typical in style and subject for this interesting and unusual artist. He worked in a sketchy and illustrative manner with use of broad colour washes. The pair are both in very good untouched condition with only the odd minor mark. Frederick William Hattersley was born in Sheffield in 1859 his father was a stove and fender manufacturer in the city. The family appears to have diversified and by the 1880’s he is listed as a carver and gilder. By 1896 he was recorded in the local trade directories as an artist. Hattersley was an extremely talented watercolourist of landscapes and beach scenes and while he is little recorded because he did not exhibit in London he is widely admired and collected.
