Isidore-Marie Peyret (1880-1962) was friends with the art deco sculptors Wlerick and Despiau, but was one of the rare few students of the master Auguste Renoir. While in his own practice, Peyret moved towards Expressionism, he never betrayed the Impressionism he was taught: it still can be felt in the way he uses and diffuses light to model and to add feeling to the scenes he paints.

In the present work, Peyret uses a panoramic view to pain a vast, atmospheric sky over a village and its surrounding fields. I like the figure of the child in the foreground particularly, captured in motion, as if on a photograph.

Painted in a bold, expressive style, the work has a timeless feel and can be hung without a frame for a contemporary look. An oil on paper laid on to canvas by the artist himself, the picture measures 20 x 64 cm and is signed and dated at the lower right.
