Landscape Oil Painting by John William Schofield

A fine and decorative oil on board landscape scene by John William Schofield 1865-1944. A charming view depicting misty mountains in the background, scrub and gorse to the fore and a figure in the middle distance. The work is very capably done and shows great skill at fine, light details and also a broad free impressionist type handling of vegetation in the foreground. The painting is signed to the lower right ‘J.W.Schofield’. John William Schofield 1865-1944 was a highly regarded artist, he studied at the Westminster School of Art and in Paris under Bougereau and Lefebvre and painted portraits, landscapes and flowers. He lived in Halifax and Devon and exhibited widely and profusely including The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists, Arlington Gallery, Birmingham, The Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, The Walker Gallery Liverpool, London Salon, Manchester, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal institute of Oil Painters. He was elected a member of The Royal Society of British artists in 1903 and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1917. This work has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. It is framed in a period oak frame which works very well with the piece. The whole is a decorative work by a highly regarded artist and is ready to hang. C.1900.
