Italian Scene Oil on Canvas

An interesting and decorative oil on canvas Italian scene. The work shows a typically Italian range of buildings, possibly Venice, with plaster covered walls and perhaps a canal in the front. The building with the high windows in the background looks to be the back of a church. The work is an impressionist exercise in capturing light and shade with the sun directly on the wall in front of the viewer and the whole foreground cast in shadow. The painting is capably done but appears to be unsigned though it is on an English canvas indicating an origin. The work has been professionally cleaned and wax lined. The simple oak frame is the original and compliments very well with the aesthetic of the painting. The whole is an interesting and decorative work and is ready to hang. C.1900
