Victorian Oil Portrait Of Sir Walter Scott

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on canvas portrait of Sir Walter Scott after the original by C.R.Leslie. The work shows the famed poet and novelist seated in a baronial chair and holding a walking stick. The painting is of a good quality with a typical theatrical Victorian atmosphere of shadowy lighting. The piece is in good condition with some minor small hole repairs made over the years. The portrait remains in the original wonderful quality gilt frame with elaborate mouldings and large swept edge. The frame is in good untouched country house condition with original gilding and some minor restoration in places. The stretcher is inscribed in pencil ‘Painted by Thomas Gibbs, 26 Brick St. Brompton’ this is most likely the artist who would have been commissioned to paint this copy. The whole has a great period look and is ready to hang. C.1870.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 20 ½ by 22 ½
