Large Landscape Oil Painting by R. Wellesley Webster

A fine and large oil on canvas by R Wellesley Webster (Exh 1887-1903)) probably a scene of Bruges in Belgium. The large canvas is capably worked in an impressionist manner with a canal running through the centre which brilliantly reflects the city. The piece is signed and dated to the lower right: R Wellesley Webster 1888. R. Wellesley Webster is recorded as exhibiting in the period 1887 to 1903 his addresses include Manchester, Scotland and Stockport. He exhibited at the Manchester City Gallery, The Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Academy in London. One of his Royal Academy entries was titled ‘Notre Dame, Bruges’ and could be this work. He appears to have specialised in works depicting water in oils and watercolour and travelled widely on the continent, developing an impressionist style. The painting is in good condition it does have some craquelure in places and stretcher marks but this is not unusual for a canvas of this size and not at all distracting from the piece as a whole. The work has been professionally cleaned and had some very minor touching in. The piece retains the original and very impressive gilt frame which is in excellent untouched condition. The whole is a large and dramatic work with a huge amount of decorative impact.
