This late 19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Adolf Mackeprang (1833-1911) depicts a picturesque panoramic view over upland scenery on the island of Als, Denmark.

From our lofty vantage point, a meandering river weaves between majestic peaks before vanishing upon a final turn. In the foreground, a dense woodland is picked out in autumnal tones. While beyond, Mackeprang adopts higher values to convey distance. Known predominantly as a painter of animals, his landscapes are less common and the composition here is a particularly interesting one. By selecting a wider view, he emphasises the vastness of this broad expanse. You can almost feel a rush of air as if standing upon an adjacent rock.

Adolf Mackeprang was the son of a tenant farmer and learned agriculture in his early years. Surrounded by pastoral influences, his oeuvre celebrates the natural world - its beasts, seasons and various moods.

Monogrammed in the lower left and held within a splendid frame with foliate.
