Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
With right hand held under his jacket, a sign of assured leadership, he’s a man of distinction. His brown suit lacks frivolity but conveys sophistication. It’s interesting to compare his style with that of Brooke Boothby (c.1744-1824) in a portrait by Wright of Derby. Our gentleman buttons up covering the majority of his cravat.
These were generally worn with a skirt in a contrasting colour.
It’s interesting to note her headwear as it reflects the changing times of the 1780s when hairstyles were becoming a little quieter. Simple coiffures, often worn with a hat, replaced the fantastical headdresses of the 1770s.
There’s a sense of refinement to these portraits - they capture a significant couple with a distinguished reputation.
Held in early 20th-century brass repoussé-clad frames.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Canvas relined. Fine craquelure but the paint is stable. Frames with some wear including losses.
