A stick barometer is a meteorological instrument that measures atmospheric pressure using a column of mercury in a vertical glass tube, gaining widespread popularity in British homes during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional stick barometers feature a solid timber casefrequently mahogany or oakprotecting a glass barometer tube filled with mercury, typically complemented by a hand-engraved ivory or silvered brass scale and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate cabinetmaking techniques, hand-scribed paper or brass vernier scales, maker signatures inscribed on the dial face, and genuine mercury within hand-blown glass components.

Mounting a historic stick barometer on a plain, neutral wall allows its traditional timber grain and architectural silhouette to serve as a striking vertical focal point within a study, hallway, or living space.

Preservation requires hanging the instrument away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect the wood finish and paper scales, while keeping the mercury tube undisturbed to prevent air bubbles.
