Description

This fine turn-of-the-century drawing depicts a shepherd and his wife following a flock of sheep through a wooded area thick with snow.

It’s exquisitely rendered in minute dashes and crosshatching.

One of the masters of this genre was Scottish artist Joseph Farquharson (1846-1935) who produced numerous snow-covered landscapes with sheep. He painted ‘en plein air’ (outside), often from a portable painting hut with a stove, and was known affectionately as ‘Frozen Mutton Farquharson’.

Here we see his influence - in this adroitly composed chilly vista.
