Sneinton Manor Oil Painting by Samuel Richards

A fine oil on artist board of Sneinton Manor in Nottingham by Samuel Richards. The painting shows the street that ran along the manor house looking towards the building. It is a wonderfully detailed work of a long since gone historic building. The whole has a great sense of peace and time with the long shadows of the late afternoon cloaking the street. The work is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower left. Samuel Richards was a Nottingham landscape artist exhibiting between 1895 and 1901 with nine works at the city art gallery. The painting retains the original exhibition label for the city gallery on the reverse, it is also mounted in the original fine quality gilt frame. The Manor House at Sneinton was owned by Earl Manvers and was an impressive three storey brick building built at the end of the sixteenth century, it was demolished in 1894 making it most likely that this work was painted just before the building was torn down and exhibited the next year. The whole is a decorative and fine painting with an interesting story to tell. C.1895.
