Grand Tour Bronze Warrior By Gladenbeck

Rare late 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze of a Heroic Nude Young Greek Warrior by Oskar Gladenbeck (1850-1921). The body position indicates the subject was originaly depicted holding a shield to protect his head and a sword in his right hand and was fighting someone on horseback. Probably based on the fragmentary figures from the West Pediment of the Temple of Aesculapius at Epidaurus. After the antique Roman original discovered in 1813 in Lyon on the Croix-Rouse Hill along with two other statues of Diana and Mercury. The Young Warrior became the property of the Duke of Blacas and now resides in the Bibliotheque National de France in Paris. Beautifully cast and presented on a sienna and belgium black marble block base. Signed with Berlin foundry stamp. Berlin, circa 1890.
