I have the privilege of being able to live for a little while with the paintings I offer and to "test" them. I can confirm that this particular works feels like acquiring a new window in your home - one that looks out over fields on a sunny summer's day. The artist has set a floral still life with country flowers - poppies, marguerite daisies, cornflowers - in the middle of them, to which birds come flocking. Is the scene entirely realistic? Perhaps not. But who needs realism in times like ours? The artist offers us exuberance and cheerfulness along with an exquisite composition.

The painting is signed Dumont, which is a common French surname. According to a Christie's catalogue, this particular signature is that of Jean Claude Dumont (1805-1874) who, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon, exhibited still lives in Paris at the 1865 and 1870 Salons.

An oil on canvas restored and relined, the painting measures 54 x 65 cm. The overall framed size with its original arts and crafts period oak frame is 72 x 81 cm.
