Description

One of the specialities of my gallery are painters from "Monet country": the banks of the Saine in the part of Normandy which is closest to Paris where Giverny is located. Its beautiful landscape was an inspiration for both the French Impressionists and their British and American counterparts.

I am delighted to present a painting by Pierre Maubert (1884-1954), a a member of this loose grouping of artists. Critically acclaimed - he was a member of the Salon des artistes français, where a prize was named after him - his work features in numerous books, such as "Vernon and the shores of the Seine at the time of the Impressionists", and "Artists of the Seine". A retrospective of the artist was held in the Alphonse-Georges Poulain Museum in Vernon, where paintings by the artist are also in permanent collection. One of the

Yet his works rarely surface, and little is known about him. Characteristic for his work - and radical in its time - is the fact that Maubert dispenses of a frame(work) for a paintings: instead, he zooms right in on the detail which matters to him. This may be that water, the sky, or as here, haystacks glowing in the summer sun.

Our oil on canvas dates from circa 1915-1920 and is signed at the lower right and measures 46 x 61 cm. It is presented in its original frame, the overall size being 54.5 x 74 cm.
