Miniature Victorian Oil Portrait Of A Man

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very interesting Victorian oil on card miniature portrait of a man. The portrait shows a man down on his luck, he’s dishevelled with a crumpled stove pipe hat a white face and the red nose of a drunkard. It is most likely that the artist saw this man and quickly sketched him in oils on a scrap of card. The work is unsigned and has been torn in the corner, it is a remarkable survivor. The quality of the frame and mount which appear to be original hint at the fact that the work was most likely done by an artist of some note however there is no apparent signature. The gilt frame is in lovely untouched condition and the whole has a great look and is an evocative and unusual subject. C.1850.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 9 ½ by 10
