Description

This early 20th-century self-portrait by H Schmandt (active 1919-1940) captures the artist in a daring mood.

Self-assured, smartly attired, and carefully coiffured, here’s a man brimming with confidence. Turning to his left, looking directly at the viewer, with a knowing expression that speaks volumes.

As a portraitist, the quickest way of demonstrating one’s draughtsmanship is via a skilfully rendered self-portrait. And given the diagonal signature across the arm, Schmandt was clearly proud of his work.

Signed lower right and held within a later glazed frame.

Medium: Charcoal on paper

Overall size: 21½” x 28½” / 55cm x 73cm

Year of creation: 1919

Labels & Inscriptions: ‘Metz’ under the signature. Presumably relating to Metz in France.

Condition: Areas of discolouration and historic repairs. Frame with some light wear.
