A Pair of Oil Paintings on Canvas by Etty Horton

19th century
Description

A pair of framed late Victorian oil paintings on canvas of rural scenes, with cattle watering in one and a man on horseback in another, both set by a river with trees and with fields and a settlement beyond, under sunlit skies, both framed in elaborate gilt swept frames, circa 1885. Canvas size (each) 16” x 24” (40cm x 61cm).

Etty Horton (1835-1905) is best known as a prolific painter of pleasant rural and river landscapes, of which these are very representative.

Condition: Excellent, both paintings are in very good condition, with no paint loss or craquelure, the colours are good, and both have been cleaned at some point in the not too distant past. The frames are both in very good condition, and the paintings are highly decorative examples of the late Victorian genre.
