This stunning floral still life with its nod to the Flemish old masters - a bee and a housefly can be spotted on the petals - nonetheless has a distinctly modern flavour. It elegantly blends hyperrealism and surrealism and has that depth of feeling that I often notice in works from the difficult years of the second third of the 20th Century.

Exquisitely painted with luminous colours, it dates from the 1940s or early 50s. French in origin, it is signed with a monogram which I have not encountered before. And oil on paper laid down on board, the painting measures 54 x 46 cm and is presented in its original frame. The overall framed size is 68 x 59 cm.
