19th century portrait of a Military officer 57th Regiment,(West Middlesex) wearing the Most Honourable Order of the Bath
 
signed R A Clark and dated 1840 (lower left), oil on canvas Housed in a gilt frame
 
The size overall being 81 x 93 cm, whilst the painting is 61 x 75cm (24'' x 29.5'')
 
The rear of the painting with a tag from Frederick Winwood Ltd Removals and the stencilled name Major J M Smyth.

The sitter is wearing the uniform of the 57th Regiment (West Middlesex)
 
the uniform would suggest of Crimea period in which the regiment fought at Inkerman and Sebastopol.
 
In overall very good condition
 
The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was a regiment of line infantry in the British Army, raised in 1755.
 
Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 77th Regiment of Foot to form the Middlesex Regiment in 1881
