A fine and interesting oil on canvas by Richard Arthur Crosswaite Murry. The work is titled on the reverse ‘At the Races’ and depicts a group of three people sat in a line intently watching a race. The piece is typical of the artist with a bold use of colour. The work has been professionally cleaned and some minor restoration made. The painting is not signed on the front but retains the exhibition label on the reverse for the Holborn Art Exhibition of 1954 with all the artist’s details. The frame is the original and is a repurposed one from an earlier date that the artist has painted to suit his piece, this was not uncommon practice at the time. The frame is in good condition with some rubbing back. Richard Arthur Crosswaite Murry (8 May 1902 – December 1984) was born in London and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art where, in 1925, he was awarded a Robert Rose scholarship.
