Oil Painting of a Man with Lute

An interesting and decorative oil on wood panel depicting a lute player. The work is almost certainly a copy of a Dutch Golden Age masterpiece or similar. The quality of painting is superb depicting the man in a difficult pose looking back over his shoulder with half his face in shadow. The work is not signed though this is not unusual for copyist pieces. The whole is in good condition having been professionally cleaned though there are some marks from warping in the timber panel that catch the light at angles. The painting retains what is likely the original frame which has been overgilded and then worn back giving it a great decorative look. The piece is an excellent example of the type with a huge amount of period decorative appeal. C.1880.
