Still Life Oil Painting by Colin Campbell

A fine still life oil on canvas by Colin Cairness Clinton Campbell 1894-1970. The painting depicts in the post-impressionist style a silver lustre jug filled with yellow flowers and is titled on the reverse ‘Silver and Gold’. The work is beautifully composed and the technique superb with a bold use of the brush and thick impasto paint to contrast texture and colour. The painting is in good untouched condition and is signed to the lower right ‘Colin Campbell’. Colin Cairness Clinton Campbell was born in 1894 and is known as a flower and portrait painter. He studied in New York and at the Byam Shaw School and the Slade School in London. He exhibited widely and most often at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts but also at the Royal Scottish Academy and Goupil Gallery, his work is held at the Glasgow Art Gallery. The painting retains a label on the reverse which shows the owner of the piece was Lady Kathleen Curzon-Herrick who was the famous author, Maud Cairnes. The painting retains the original wonderful quality silvered frame giving the work a superb period look. The painting is in excellent condition however there are some old woodworm holes on the back of the frame which has been treated and is quite dead. The whole is a great still life from the Art Deco period. C.1930.
